Tattoo Aftercare
Your new tattoo is an open wound and requires proper care to heal correctly. Following these aftercare steps will help ensure the best healing results and longevity of your tattoo.
IMPORTANT NOTES ON HEALING & RISKS
Delayed Healing & Numbing Products
If a numbing product was used during your session, be aware that it may delay the healing process. Some numbing agents restrict blood flow and affect how your body repairs the tattooed skin.
Expect healing to take slightly longer than usual, and follow aftercare instructions diligently.
Allergic Reactions to Tattoo Ink
While allergic reactions to tattoo ink are rare, they can happen at any time, even if you’ve had previous tattoos without issue.
Symptoms can include redness, swelling, itching, or raised skin around the tattoo, even months or years after getting it.
If you suspect an allergic reaction, contact a medical professional immediately.
AFTERCARE STEPS
1. Cleaning Your Tattoo
Wash your tattoo thoroughly with a low pH, antibacterial soap to remove excess ink, plasma, and bacteria.
Rinse well with lukewarm water.
Let the tattoo air dry completely before applying any product.
2. Applying Aftercare Cream
Use Yayo LaVey aftercare cream, available in our studio or at Yayo Familia’s website. Alternatively, we recommend Palmer’s cocoa butter.
Apply a small amount—just enough to moisturise the skin without suffocating it. Ideally, you want a thin sheen, not a thick layer, as this can lead to thickened scabs and other potential issues during the healing process.
Do not over-apply, as too much moisture can lead to irritation or infection.
3. Frequency
Repeat the clean, dry, and apply process at least four times a day (morning, lunchtime, dinnertime, and before bed) for optimal healing.
Consistency is key—keep your tattoo clean and lightly moisturised at all times.
DANGERS TO AVOID
Pet Hair & Unclean Bed Sheets
Pet hair, dander, and bacteria can easily contaminate a fresh tattoo, leading to infection and irritation. Keep your tattoo away from pets while healing.
Unwashed bed sheets are a breeding ground for bacteria. Change your sheets daily to reduce the risk of infection. Sleeping on dirty or used bedding can introduce bacteria to the wound, delaying healing and increasing the chance of complications.
Keeping Your Tattoo Wrapped in Cling Film is Unsafe
Leaving your tattoo wrapped in cling film or plastic wrap for extended periods traps moisture, sweat, and bacteria, creating a breeding ground for infection.
Do not rewrap your tattoo once the initial wrap from the artist is removed. Instead, allow it to breathe and heal naturally.
❌ Do not pick, scratch, or peel your tattoo—this can cause scarring and loss of ink.
❌ Avoid soaking in water (baths, pools, hot tubs) until fully healed. Showers are fine.
❌ Stay out of direct sunlight and avoid tanning beds and gym workouts while healing.
❌ Do not apply petroleum-based products or thick creams that can trap bacteria.
❌ Avoid tight clothing or anything that may cause excessive rubbing on the tattoo.
